In Memoriam – Bob Johnson and Tim Powers

This year the YRRC has lost two prominent members of the running community: Bob Johnson and Tim Powers. On October 1st, longtime member and Hall of Fame inductee Tim Powers passed away. Tim was well-known for his running abilities, having set a cross-country record at Boardman High School in 1983. Tim was an active volunteer and racer for many years with the club, and made strong friendships with many members. He will be greatly missed. Visitation hours are being held in his honor at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 9th, from 4 – 6PM.

Bob Johnson passed in July of this year. Before moving to North Carolina, Bob was a big part of the local running community, running countless races and joining the road runners for many Sunday runs. He even has a section in the park known as Bob’s Cut-through, which we will incorporate into a run listed in the events below. Please join us to honor both Tim and Bob on Sunday, November 3rd.

Sunday, November 3rd is YRRC Board Member Elections. If you have been interested in learning more about/joining the board, this is your chance to throw your hat in the ring! We will also hold a Bob Johnson and Tim Powers Memorial Run on this date. We will be at Old Log Cabin, close enough to run to/through Bob’s cut-through. Please attend to celebrate Bob and Tim with us.

Hall of Fame Nominations are currently being accepted and will be awarded at our Christmas party this year, along with the Pat Malandra volunteer award(s) and Attendance Awards. This year’s Christmas party will be held on Sunday, December 22nd. We have some vintage YRRC branded gear that will be up for sale at bargain prices, at our Christmas party. We will accept cash donations and donations via a QR code for our Paypal donation page.

Next year we will be celebrating 50 Years of the Youngstown Road Runners Club! We are coming up with some fun ways to remember our past and celebrate our future. 2025 Race Book submissions are open. For 2025, we are waiving the mandatory $2 donation to purchase a book, and offering the race books for FREE!* We will be replacing the ‘required donation’ notation with a ‘suggested donation’ QR code. In this way we hope to get our books and the races included in them spread further into the running community, while still accepting donations from any generous runner who would like to support our nonprofit endeavors. We will also be accepting ads from businesses all around Youngstown, so let us know of any businesses that would like to contribute to our race book! As always, proceeds from the race book benefit our YSU scholarship fund, awarded each year to a distance runner at YSU.
